The expert life-saving actions of staff at Kingston’s Don Tatnell Leisure Centre were recognised with a Community Hero Award from Ambulance Victoria recently.

Presented at Parliament House, the state-wide awards recognise members of the public for their involvement and assistance at the scene of a medical emergency.

On 28 April this year, lifeguards from Don Tatnell witnessed a man collapse in cardiac arrest. Fortunately the Centre has an automated external defibrillator and staff are well trained in how to use it. The lifeguards performed CPR and defibrillated the man prior to the ambulance arriving.

Don Tatnell’s staff responded quickly and professionally to a very serious situation and their responsiveness not only helped to save the life of the man, but ensured he recovered quickly from the incident.

The teams working at Kingston’s leisure centres are often called to deal with life saving emergencies so it is very rewarding for this hard work to be recognised with a Community Hero Award from Victoria’s Ambulance Service.

Kingston’s life guards are highly trained to deal with any issues and both our Leisure Centres, Waves in Highett and Don Tatnell Leisure Centre in Mordialloc, are fully equipped with essential life saving devices, including a heart defibrillator.
