Why Become a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety?
 
AUSTSWIM teachers are in high demand by both private and public swim schools.  There are genuine work opportunities in schools, VICSWIM programs and aquatic and recreation facilities for those with an AUSTSWIM qualification.
 
AUSTSWIM teachers enjoy the reward of instructing a variety of cultures, age and ability groups including infants, children, adults and people with a disability. 
 
AUSTSWIM teachers are a major force in the prevention of drowning, water related injuries and water safety education.
 

 
What are the pre-requisites?
 
Candidates may enrol into an AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course at 16 years of age but are not eligible to receive the reward until they are 17 years of age.
 
Candidates are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability.
 
A candidate must also provide evidence of holding a current approved cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate.  For thoise candidates that require a CPR certificate, ARV can provide a list of industry providers.
 

 
How can I get my AUSTSWIM qualification?
  • You need to Enrol and Attend a Course - includes theory and practical assessments, swimming and rescue techniques.  View upcoming course dates on our Professional Development Calendar
  • Teaching Experience - you then need to gain appropriate experience by observing and shadow teaching swimming and water safety activities under supervision of a qualified AUSTSWIM teacher.  Candidates should contact an aquatic facility to arrange supervised teaching experience with an AUSTSWIM teacher.  Download the current list of 'Friendly Facilities' - locations that have indicated their willingness to accommodate students looking to complete their competency hours.
  • Issuing of Certificate - you need to submit all required paper work within 12 months of completing the course to receive your AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Certificate.
