General Information
AUSTSWIM registration is valid for a period of 3 years. AUSTSWIM teachers are required to re-register the AUSTSWIM certificate by the expiry date shown on the AUSTSWIM card (extra fees apply for late registrations). To re-register your AUSTSWIM registration:
-
Complete an AUSTSWIM re-registration form, available here.
-
Complete practical swimming teaching experience (40 hours) and professional development (10 hours).
-
Complete recognised CPR certificate (within last 12 months).
-
Attach a colour passport size photograph of yourself (only required every 9 years, see re-registration form for measurements)
-
Pay a re-registration fee (to cover 3 years of registration).
Practical Teaching Experience
A minimum of 40 hours is to be gained over the 3 year period. Teaching experience must be gained in all qualified areas in which an applicant wishes to re-register (Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety, Infants, People with a Disability, Towards Competitive Strokes, Adults).
-
If the minimum of 40 hours of teaching experience over the three-year period has not been met, you have the option to complete a Teaching Competence Assessment. Contact the AUSTSWIM office to obtain this form - please call 1300 885 529.
Professional Development
A minimum of 10 hours of professional development is required for re-registration. AUSTSWIM recognises that there are vast amounts of professional development opportunities available that would positively contribute to your experience as a teacher, some will be aquatic based and others will not (eg. childhood education subjects, communication strategies and legal studies).
Hours can be gained by attending aquatic education courses, relevant non-aquatic education courses, conferences, seminars, in-house training and workshops. The following awards are examples of professional development programs traditionally available to AUSTSWIM teachers:
-
Professional Development Workshops
-
Royal Life Saving Society Australia: Bronze Medallion
-
Royal Life Saving Society Australia: Pool Lifeguard
-
Surf Life Saving Australia: Bronze Medallion
-
Other workshops and conferences (including ARV AquaSummit)
It is recommended professional development be undertaken during, not at the conclusion, of your registration period. Each individual course / qualification / workshop can only be claimed once in every 3 year period. CPR does not contribute towards professional development as it is a separate requirement of AUSTSWIM re-registration.
Please note: You are not required to send in proof of attendance for professional development unless requested to do so through an audit.
CPR Certificate
A current CPR certificate (within the last 12 months) is required to maintain your AUSTSWIM re-registration.
-
A CPR Course provider must be a registered training organisation and comply with the guidelines of the Australian Resuscitation Council.
-
Initial courses = nominal 4 hours, Update courses = nominal 2 hours. Training must cover adults, children and infants with practice in one and two operator CPR.
-
First Aid certificates - CPR component is only valid for 12 months.
